Kallan Smyth, Site Manager at LSR Construction Group, has spent the last three years bringing his expertise to some of our largest and most exciting projects. In this Q&A, we chatted with Kallan about his career growth, his approach to site management and what it takes to successfully lead complex builds.
LSR: What aspects of your role at LSR have helped shape your approach to site management?
KS: Working with a like-minded team makes all the difference. Everyone here has a solid work ethic which really helps to keep our projects on track. Building strong relationships with your team and subcontractors is key to understanding what they need in their roles to deliver high-quality results.
LSR: How has your role as Site Manager evolved since you first started with LSR?
KS: I’ve been able to refine the systems I work with and focus on improving how things run on-site. LSR is big on adopting advanced technology and new innovations, so I’ve had the chance to implement more efficient processes and tools that have improved the way we manage projects day-to-day.
LSR: You’ve worked across a significant number of projects across Melbourne. What do you think is key to managing complex builds successfully?
KS: Keeping everyone on the same page and making sure the team and trades know what’s expected is essential. It's about giving clear direction and building rapport with the team from the start. When you have open communication, things tend to run more smoothly, and you can address challenges quickly before they escalate.
LSR: Bonds Lane is one of LSR’s notable current projects. Can you tell us more about the project itself and your role in overseeing its progress?
KS: Bonds Lane is tracking incredibly well. It’s a multi-use site built for a 7-Eleven, Red Rooster and Starbucks. It’s our second project for this client, after the recent completion of O’Herns Road, and it’s been great to keep that relationship going.
LSR: How has LSR supported your professional growth?
KS: It’s a great place to work— with room to learn from mistakes and move forward. I’ve completed my Diploma of Construction Management with their backing and they’ve provided leadership training for the whole site management team. They’re big on upskilling, and if you want to grow in your career, they’ll support you all the way.
LSR: What keeps you engaged and passionate about your work in construction?
KS: It’s the people and the projects. Construction is always dynamic, and LSR is a young and forward-thinking company. We’ve got a strong focus on repeat business, which says a lot about how we operate. That environment definitely keeps me motivated.
LSR: What advice would you give to someone just starting out in their construction career?
KS: Have a hands-on approach, stay flexible and find a company that shares your values. Relationships matter—learn from the people around you, listen and never be afraid to put your hand up to try something new.
